How did AWSM@OSU get started? Mike Sowell, an OSU associate professor, had been formulating the idea for AWSM@OSU for some time.
“I’ve always had Jenni Carlson come speak to my classes,” Sowell said. “When she became president of AWSM and when we started our sports media degree, and with the majority of women in the sports media program being women, I just thought it’d be a natural fit.” And a natural fit it has been. With the blossoming sports media program at Oklahoma State, AWSM@OSU fits in perfectly. We have had a number of fantastic guest speakers, we went to a Thunder game in Spring 2011 and we had our first recruiting event - a bake sale. |
What does AWSM@OSU do? AWSM's main purpose is to be an advocacy group for women pursuing a career in sports media, and to do that, there are a number of things we strive to do at AWSM@OSU.
One way to gain insight and understanding into the sports media world is to bring in guest speakers. AWSM has had a number of impressive guests who have shared their priceless knowledge. We also go on social outings to bond and have fun. We went to an OKC Thunder game in Spring 2011 with the Sports Media Club and hope to do more in the future. These are just a couple things AWSM@OSU does. We also hold panel discussions and inform our members of any job or internship opportunities we know of. AWSM@OSU is a wonderful organization full of intelligent, driven and passionate women and men who all want to see the advancement of women in sports media. What is to come for AWSM@OSU? We are already proud of what we accomplished in the first year, but there is still so much more we want to do.
We want to bring in more great guest speakers and hold enlightening panel discussions. We also want to raise money to have social events and maybe even make the national convention a yearly trip. This is just the beginning for AWSM@OSU! |
